Ethie Haworth Children's Cancer Care Center

For a child in treatment, an infusion visit can last hours, and it comes again and again. Corewell Health wanted its pediatric hematology and oncology clinic at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital to feel like a place to heal, not just a place to be treated.

The space started as offices. Turning it into a clinic meant fitting exam rooms, infusion areas, sedation rooms, and a specialty pharmacy onto a tight floor plate with few exterior windows, then making a clinical program feel restorative and family-centered.

HKS organized infusion into three zones that let patients choose how they spend treatment: the "garden" for being together, the semi-private "hive" for comfort and security, and the "sky" for privacy and reflection. A central nurse station anchors all three. Where daylight can't reach, adaptive lighting follows the course of the day to support patients' circadian rhythms. A hospitality-style kitchenette gives families a place to gather, and CreatureVerse, a digital game, lets children in different zones play together and pick up where they left off on their next visit.

The result feels clinically advanced and deeply human: calmer for patients, easier for families, and more efficient for the staff who care for them.
