Marquette, MI
The Marquette Federal Building serves the Marquette, MI community as their post office, US District Court Building, and US Marshal Service Facility. The original construction took place between 1935 and 1937. PBA has provided renovations to the court support areas and USMS offices and detention area.
Approximately 15,000 square feet of space was renovated on the 2nd and 3rd floors. The 2nd floor became new offices for the support services of the US Federal Court. The historic courtroom had minimal updates to the A/V equipment. The 3rd floor was renovated to add new detention cells and offices for the US Marshal Service. A new elevator was added in a small addition to the building to allow secure transport of USMS detainees to the detention area and courtroom in an effort to avoid public areas during transport.
Our engineers provided new rooftop HVAC systems and extended existing hot water systems to new radiators. Extensive coordination was required to route systems in limited ceiling spaces and within very solid brick, block, and plaster walls. Detention-grade systems were provided for detention areas and secure corridors. Extensive design standards from the clients were adhered to.
Lighting incorporated dimmable fixtures in most areas, incorporating ASHRAE 90.1 control requirements. Detention areas utilized keyed switches only with no automatic control.
The project accomplished its goal of providing modern systems within a historic building envelope, as well as providing improved safety for moving people through the building.
