Peter Basso Associates completed the Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing engineering for a major addition to Oakwood Southshore Hospital & Medical Center, now Beaumont Hospital, Trenton Michigan. The project included a major addition of five stories plus a basement, totaling 191,000 square feet of addition and renovation. The addition included 114 patient rooms, 5 operating rooms, an emergency center, as well as a cafeteria, auditorium and support spaces.
The project delivery method was design-build on an accelerated schedule; occupancy occurred less than 2 years after the start of schematic design. The project construction cost was lower than the owner’s budget.
Project coordination was enhanced by the use of 3 dimensional CAD during all phases of design, in order to avoid space conflicts wherever possible. PBA engineered modifications to the boiler plant and power plant in order to support the addition. HVAC for the addition was provided from a factory fabricated mechanical penthouse, which helped to reduce construction time and costs.
Bell Memorial Hospital was a total replacement facility comprised of 144,545 square feet of floor area on one level. The facility included 25 inpatient beds, including ICU and LDRP beds, 3 operating rooms with provisions for future expansion, emergency department, diagnostic and treatment areas, laboratory, kitchen, laundry, a medical office building, and all required support spaces and functions for a complete critical access hospital.
PBA worked closely with the construction manager as part of the design-build team in order to ensure that the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems were in line with the project budget as well as the high quality standards that PBA delivers to its health care clients.
PBA designed some innovative solutions to challenges posed by the project and its location. One challenge was the relatively poor reliability record of the public electric utility and the lack of an available second source from the utility. PBA designed the 2 Megawatt emergency electricity generation system to carry almost the entire hospital during a power outage, with only a few non-essential loads not being picked up on the generators.

Peter Basso Associates (PBA) provided engineering and design services to develop a complete set of plans, details and specifications for all auxiliary systems (referred to as extra low voltage or “ELV” in the region). In cooperation with specialty subconsultants, PBA prepared tender documents for the following systems: voice, data and video distribution from the services entrance to the outlets; nurse call; intercom systems; paging systems; lecture hall and conference room mediation; teleconferencing; distance learning; interpretation system; satellite master antenna television system (SMATV); access control; and a building-wide, IP-based video surveillance system. All systems were coordinated and integrated with the architectural and electrical design.
PBA provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing design engineering services for a new medical office building to house Mendelson Kornblum Orthopedics, an affiliate of Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital in Livonia.
The project included 23,000 sf of medical office space, 2,000 sf of retail space, 4,000 sf of physical therapy space, 1,000 sf of general office space and a 10,000 square foot surgery center.
