Peter Basso Associates provided engineering services to Central Michigan University to evaluate the condition and operation of the temperature controls, HVAC air handling equipment, and energy management/utility monitoring for 13 campus buildings.
The study included the following:
After assessment of the data gathered in the study, PBA developed a campus wide master plan for all 13 buildings recommending upgrades of all HVAC systems, replacing all pneumatic controls to direct digital controls, and integrating building temperature controls into a central monitoring and operating energy management system.
PBA provided MEP engineering design and lighting design services for the renovation of the Science Classrooms Building at Concordia University. The 13,000 square foot renovation encompassed a complete interior renovation to the 1960's era facility, creating a state-of-the-art science facility. Renovations included new HVAC systems for three classrooms and one lecture hall, new lighting and power. In addition, new ADA Toilet Rooms were added and connected to existing building utilities.
The existing traditional cafeteria-style dining facility at Ferris State University, was converted into marché style food service.
Classroom space in the South Commons building was also renovated into a full service convenience store. Completed in 2009, the total project size was 30,000 SF.
As part of Hope College’s $175 million fundraising campaign – the largest in the college’s history, PBA provided MEP engineering design services for a new 10,000 square foot Art Museum.
The $5 million facility houses the college’s extensive Permanent Collection and provides learning opportunities for students, faculty and visitors.
Additional programming space includes special exhibition space, support space, an entry lobby and circulation area, as well as an outdoor sculpture garden and art plaza. Precision, 24/7 temperature and humidity control was required for the museum spaces, along with flexible lighting systems.
MEP engineering was provided for the Nursing Research Center addition to Michigan State University’s Bott Life Science Building, which attained LEED Silver rating from the USGBC in 2014.
The addition includes seminar rooms, office areas, conference rooms, commons area, storage, data & communications rooms, restrooms, and electrical and mechanical rooms.
A series of water-to-water heat pumps provides hot water and chilled water to the addition. A single water to water heat exchanger provides winter chilled water, when source water temperature permits. The source water circulates from the geo-exchange field--the first on MSU’s campus--to the heat pumps. Chilled water and heating hot water may be produced simultaneously in order to satisfy the heating and cooling requirements.
The building is backed up by an onsite natural gas generator that is located in the basement. This unit backs up standby loads designated by the owner, as well as life safety loads. The building is fed with a 1500kVA double ended substation, also located in the basement. This unit is configured in a main-tie-main configuration.
