Northern Michigan University, valuing the input of its students, put together focus groups in an effort to provide a campus-wide survey for the naming of the new housing complex. “The Woods” was the number one response for the development, which is comprised of 6 residence halls.
The phased construction project saw the opening of Birch Hall West and Cedar Hall West for the Fall 2017 semester, followed by the east wings of each that following January, and Maple Hall east/west in August 2018.
PBA provided MEP engineering and lighting design services to NMU. The six buildings, consisting of more than 1,200 beds, are connected by a central spine called the Marketplace. Also featured is The Lodge, a large multi-purpose room which gives students 24/7 access to amenities such as a fireplace, study areas, and outdoor patio. Each of the six “wings” boast a living-learning type community by providing internet and wi-fi capabilities, classrooms, study rooms, TV lounges, and laundry facilities.
