Hillsdale, MI
The John and Dede Howard Music Building on the campus of Hillsdale College boasts a large rehearsal hall for orchestra and choir and a smaller, intimate recital hall featuring a conditioned storage room for the specially donated grand piano.
PBA provided mechanical and electrical engineering and lighting design services for the two-story, 32,810 square foot facility. In addition to the rehearsal and recital halls, the music hall features 9 new studio offices and jazz studio, a classroom, percussion studio, and 26 new practice rooms of various sizes. Acoustical separation of spaces and careful design of the mechanical system enhance the building’s service to the musicians. The rehearsal hall, recital hall, and music classroom are all equipped with state-of-the-art recording, playback, and video electronics.
The architectural lighting design enhances the artwork in corridors using multiple layers of illumination and controls while complementing architectural finishes and details. PBA was honored to receive an Illuminating Engineering Society Illumination Design Award Certificate for our efforts.
