The two-year, three-phased South Patient Tower project at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Hospital also included the construction of a maintenance substation, a patient/visitor parking lot, and an enclosed walkway over Woodward Avenue to connect the hospital and parking area.
Peter Basso Associates provided MEP engineering design services for the new 8-story, 300,000 square foot, contemporary-styled facility featuring 204 private and technologically enhanced patient rooms.
The basement of the facility houses materials management, clinical engineering space and room for a conference area, while the majority of the first floor is shelled for future kitchen/dining. Levels 2 and 3 house the Intensive Care Unit and Critical Care Unit. Of the remaining floors 4 through 7, two floors are med/surgery and two floors are shelled for future build-out.
New mechanical and electrical systems included booster pumps, chillers, domestic water heaters, air handling systems, electrical double ended substation, lighting, and controls. Additionally, the building’s equipment utilized steam from the existing campus.
In an effort to incorporate new technology and patient privacy into the building, the design included “smart” beds with nurses’ stations/observation windows between rooms, hemodialysis outlet boxes on multiple floors, and art/water features for patient meditation.
